The Unexpected Way I Benefitted from Seeing a Psychotherapist

Maybe you feel the same way

Last year was a turbulent one for everyone. While I still had a full-time job with benefits, I thought I’d make good use of them by seeing a psychotherapist for the first time ever.

At the time, the pandemic was still ever-present, life was feeling pretty isolating, we were in the early stages of preparing for our drastic move to the west coast, and I was facing some minor health issues — so I figured talking to a professional wouldn’t hurt.

I went into the experience a little nervous but with an open mind. The company I reached out to asks new clients some questions before pairing them up with a suitable professional. I knew I wanted to work with a woman because I would feel more comfortable opening up this way. Within a few weeks I was set up with a young woman who was friendly and approachable, asked very good questions, and of course, was a great listener.

My goals going into this process were to help me develop the courage to start some tough conversations with loved ones that I’d been dreading (such as, “hey mom and dad, we’re moving across the country”), work through some body image challenges I’d been facing, and of course, for overall processing of emotions and the side effects of pandemic life.
